Twitch is a live streaming platform. It is widely used by gamers to gameplays and commentaries. Recently, an advisory safety council was formed to make policies which rose to an issue.
Like many other social companies, Twitch has formed an advisory safety council which is aimed at improving security on the site. This is aimed to prevent harassment online, make policy and product updates among other things. This need has arisen due to the incident in October last year, where Twitch was used to stream the shootings in Germany. After that, Twitch increased it’s security team by double and made additional improvements in the security field.
The council formed includes Emma Llansó, director of the Center for Democracy and Technology’s Free Expression Project; T. L. Taylor, a sociologist with a focus on online gaming from Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Dr Sameer Hinduja, the co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center and Deputy CEO at The Diana Award, Alex Holmes.
CohhCarnage, Zizaran, FerociouslySteph and Cupahnoodle, who are experienced Twitch Streamers are in the council too.
It was also announced that the council will meet- up regularly and keep the public updated on progress and developments.
The Council Member Under Fire
During a broadcast on May 14, one of the members of the council, FerociouslySteph said ” Voice chat is unfair.. the only way to have a level playing field for the highest level of play is to not have voice-chat… to not have people give up their linguistic profiles.”
She said that voice chats will eventually lead to harassment and bulking online and the only way to stop that would be to quit the game immediately which players cannot.
She had said something similar on removing voice chat back in 2018.
Streamers and the audience did not agree with her statement and took to social media to voice their opinions.
Asmongold, a famous Twitch streamer said that putting her in the council is a huge mistake. Panda, another famous streamer agreed to this.
Many other streamers argued that she should be removed from the council and that the council would fail to fulfil it’s purpose otherwise.
